A Message from the AAUW President
The political conventions are upon us! This Monday, Aug. 27, Republicans converge on Tampa, Florida, to officially nominate Gov. Mitt Romney and Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) to headline the party’s ticket. Convention delegates will haggle over the party platform, and there will be schmoozing and speechmaking galore. And then, just as the GOP Convention draws to a close, the Democrats take over Charlotte, North Carolina, on Sept. 3. The Democratic Convention will deal with the formalities of renominating the Obama-Biden ticket, but they’ll likely spend a lot of time rebutting what the Republicans said the prior week.

Per usual, AAUW will be in the middle of it all! Our own intrepid Policy Director, Lisa Maatz, will be in the thick of things at both conventions. This is a great time for our top lobbyist to push our policy agenda, talk to party power brokers, and raise awareness about our nationwide nonpartisan voter education and turnout campaign, It’s My Vote: I Will be Heard. AAUW has submitted comments to both party platform committees and has been credentialed to attend both conventions. Lisa will be in the convention hall, talking with delegates and other advocates. She will also be live-tweeting some of the most important speeches, so watch Action Network for that schedule, coming soon. She will also be submitting blogs each day, so watch Facebook and AAUW Dialog for pictures and updates from the conventions.

I hope you’ll take the time to watch some of the political conventions each week. In the meantime, keep up the good work on voter registration drives – AAUW is reaching a truly impressive number of new registrants. We’re just over 70 days out from the election, and once we get past the conventions, we’re in the home stretch!

Yours in AAUW,

Carolyn Garfein
AAUW President
