Take action to eliminate gender pay gap
A new report released this month by the Department of Labor revealed the reality for women in the workforce: the gender pay gap widens with age. These findings are similar to AAUW’s Behind the Pay Gap report.
Salary surveys compiled by the U.S. Census Bureau indicate that while young women earn up to 90 percent of what their male colleagues do, the salaries of women over the age of 35 are just 75 percent of those of their male counterparts. Though the narrowed pay gap has been attributed to younger women’s heightened attainment of post-secondary education and higher-skilled professions, women at all ages continue to earn a fraction of that of their male colleagues at all levels of employment.
Take Action! Women need the updated protections and tools the Paycheck Fairness Act can provide, and so do men. The bill passed the House well over a year ago with strong bipartisan support, and new polling data released by the Paycheck Fairness Act Coalition, of which AAUW is a key leader, shows that 84 percent of voters support a new law like the Paycheck Fairness Act. But the Senate has been sitting on it for far too long. Urge your senators to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act!
