Ohio senators voted for Hate Crimes Prevention Act
Ohio senators Sherrod Brown and George Voinovich voted for the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, which AAUW and its coalition partners were instrumental in passing.
President Obama is expected to sign the legislation into law Wednesday. AAUW Executive Director Linda Hallman will attend a White House event this week to commemorate the law’s enactment.
Take Action now to thank our senators for their affirmative vote on this landmark hate crimes prevention legislation that has been more than a decade in the making.
This critical piece of legislation will provide for stronger federal enforcement and prosecution of hate crimes against women and other groups by allowing the Department of Justice to take on cases motivated by the victim’s actual or perceived gender, gender identity, sexual orientation or disability. Enactment of this bill will be an important milestone in the fight against all forms of intolerance in our country, according to AAUW.
